Nico Wearing Baju Melayu

We bought baju melayu for Nico from First Lady boutique at Ampang Park. We didn't actually plan to go there, we accidently come across it. The initial plan was to check Salikin Sidek boutique at the same building. We check the price and material, which is very reasonable and comfortable according to Nico. For a pair of baju melayu which is only RM70 and RM30 for sampin (skirt) is a good price for a beginner.

There's  a lot of selection on material, color and design. So we choose 3 different color that might look good on him. It was dark blue, satin green and cream. Unfortunately not so much selection on sampin and only 2 design which actually look good. After mix n match, we go for dark blue baju melayu and mix gold sampin.

Next, we have to find button for that baju melayu, songkok(hat), capal(sandals) and where else if not at Jalan TAR. Its only first day of ramadhan and the street already full with people shopping for raya. Guess everybody start doing early preparation this year.

We bought button for RM15. Its look like diamond, not so big and not so small. Its clear color and really stand out on that baju melayu. Its simple and look very nice.

Songkok we get from this indian-muslim store. I didn't notice that my bf have a big head until that day. We try a lot of size but it still didn't fit his head. So the biggest size they have was 34 and thankfully it fit him nicely. I think it cost him around RM30 for that songkok.

The last item was capal which is so difficult to get. We walk everywhere and only find one place which sell it to us for RM25. The guy didn't want to give discount at first since they see mat salleh but hey, this is Jalan Tar, of cos you can get discount on everything.

Thankfully we get everything in one day even though we have to go to different places. Total price for Nico's baju raya was RM170 when our initial budget was RM500. I think he look handsome in it and i was happy since he like the finish look.

(we put this 40 pelita together, nice huh)

Ramadhan 2012

Ramadhan is back. Today mark the first day for all muslim in Malaysia to start fasting. Hari raya preparation  seems to start early this year, from decoration, cookies and traditional costumes. As for me, my kebaya nyonya was ready one month ago. Since there's no season or new design for kebaya nyonya its not a problem for me to get it earlier. I like to avoid crowd and hate to get everything last minute.

(Orange last year & black for 2012)

Today's plan is to get baju melayu for Nico. I know its a bit early but we have to get everything done this weekend since he going back to France next Friday and only back to kl few days before raya.

Since it will be his 1st time celebrating hari raya, he's a bit skeptical about the entire thing. I have to explain slowly about our culture, about religion and the connection between two. I didn't force him to try anything, not even fasting. Its warm my heart when he said he want to try it next year and get better understanding about ramadhan and hari raya first this year. I didn't expect much from him since this is entirely new experience for him as a non-muslim.

When i first suggest to him to wear baju melayu, his reaction was skeptical. he said he doesnt want to spend so much money for something that he only going to wear once and he scared he going to look stupid. So, i take initiative, not so much, just google for some picture with matsalleh wearing baju melayu and i found this.

After seeing this, he said its look nice and willing to give it a try. So he started to ask me if we going to get the same color, do he really have to wear that songkok (hat) and is it possible to wear it with snickers. I answer all the questions like mother comforting an excited kids. Its funny, i know. Hope we going to find something at Ampang park later because i know its me who going to be fussy and not him.

Selamat berpuasa to all muslim.
